The Tergar Meditation Community, founded by the revered meditation teacher and master of the Karma Kagyu and Nyingma lineages of Tibetan Buddhism Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, has announced that the renowned American Theravada Buddhist monk and scholar, Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi will host a free webinar. The live-streamed talk, titled “Back to the Roots: Mapping the Mind through Abhidharma,” will focus on insights from the Abhidharma texts on classifications of consciousness and how to cultivate beneficial mental states.

“Bhikkhu Bodhi will guide us through the ‘topography’ of consciousness and core principles of the Abhidharma, exploring how this ancient system of analysis can provide invaluable insights into the causes of suffering and the path to innate well-being,” Tergar shared with BDG.

“By systematically exploring the inner landscape of mind, we can clarify which mental states lead to suffering, which cultivate happiness and well-being in the present and future, and which ultimately lead to full inner freedom. This is a unique opportunity to learn from a renowned master teacher and deepen your understanding of these essential teachings.”

The webinar, which includes a live teaching with Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi followed by a Q&A session, is free and open to all. It will be live-streamed at the following times:

“Often referred to as “Buddhist psychology,” the Abhidharma offers a detailed map of consciousness, illuminating the intricate workings of our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions,” Tergar noted. “Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi’s teachings will emphasize the importance of understanding the mind by systematically guiding us to recognize confusion and discover the reality that leads to profound self-understanding and lasting well-being.”

Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi

Now based in the New York and New Jersey area, Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi (b. 1944) was first drawn to Buddhism in his early 20s. He traveled to Sri Lanka after completing his university education, and received novice ordination in 1972 and full ordination in 1973 under the late Sri Lankan scholar-monk Ven. Balangoda Ananda Maitreya (1896–1998).

From 1984, Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi served as the editor for the Buddhist Publication Society in Kandy, where he lived for 10 years with the senior German monk Ven. Nyanaponika Thera (1901–94), and was appointed president of the Buddhist Publication Society in 1988. He returned to the US in 2002.

In 2008, together with several of his students, Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi founded the nonprofit Buddhist Global Relief supporting hunger relief, sustainable agriculture, and education in response “to the cries of those afflicted with chronic hunger” and “inspired by the vision of a world in which debilitating poverty has finally been banished.” (Buddhist Global Relief) Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi was elected president of the non-denominational Buddhist Association of the United States in 2013.

Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi has published several important Buddhist texts as either author, translator, or editor, including: The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha: A Translation of the Majjhima Nikaya (1995; co-translated with Ven. Bhikkhu Nanamoli), The Connected Discourses of the Buddha: A Translation of the Samyutta Nikaya (2000), and In the Buddha’s Words: An Anthology of Discourses from the Pali Canon (2005).

Many, fearful of annihilation at death, construct belief systems that ascribe to their individual selves, their souls, the prospect of eternal life. A few yearn for a path to liberation but do not know where to find one. It was precisely to offer such a path that the Buddha has appeared in our midst. — Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi
