The Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC), under the guidance of spiritual leader and socially engaged Buddhist monk Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena, will oversee the operation of a newly inaugurated home for the elderly in Ladakh. The project in the Saboo Thang settlement, near the region’s joint capital of Leh, is a collaborative initiative with the Union Territory administration aimed at providing compassionate and dignified care for the region’s elderly.
The initiative reflects growing collaboration between public institutions and faith-based organizations in Ladakh, aimed at better addressing the social and emotional needs of senior citizens. The new home for the elderly is intended to provide a comprehensive residential environment that supports dignity, well-being, and a sense of belonging among its residents.
“The newly established facility, designed with modern infrastructure and thoughtful amenities, reflects a progressive vision of inclusive development,” the MIMC shared with BDG. “Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Union Territory Administration and MIMC, the responsibility for managing and operating the old age home has been entrusted to MIMC, reaffirming a shared commitment to compassionate service and community welfare.”
The home features 12 rooms and four dormitories to accommodate up to 55 elderly male and female residents. The design includes a reception and waiting area, TV room, dining and kitchen space, medical facilities, and offices, all with energy-efficient features, benefitting from eco-friendly construction materials and thermal insulation through natural earth walls.
The residence was officially inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena, in the presence of Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena, government officials, religious leaders, and community representatives.
Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena is the founder and spiritual director of the non-profit Mahabodhi International Meditation Center in India’s far north. He is also the founder of the Mahakaruna Foundation, the Save the Himalayas Foundation, and a spiritual advisor to the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB).
Speaking at the inauguration, Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena emphasized that caring for the elderly was a profound moral and spiritual responsibility.
“Our aim is to create a home where elders feel valued, heard, and cared for—where they can live with dignity and contentment,” he remarked, sharing that as custodians of wisdom, culture, and life experience, senior citizens deserved to be treated with respect, compassion, and dignity.
Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena founded the Mahabodhi International Meditation Center (MIMC) in Leh, the joint capital of Ladakh, in 1986. He has since become an exemplar of socially engaged Buddhism in the region, launching numerous humanitarian projects, events, and initiatives. His outreach work includes providing educational opportunities and refuge for underprivileged children, empowerment and literacy programs for women and other socially disadvantaged groups, healthcare for the sick and needy, and a care home for the aged and destitute. The MIMC’s expanding campus has evolved into a hub for a multitude of socio-cultural and community programs in the region.
The MIMC noted that new home for the elderly was a significant initiative that “marks an important step toward strengthening social welfare systems and ensuring a life of dignity, care, and security for senior citizens in the region. . . . [It is] envisioned as a model facility that integrates modern care systems with Ladakh’s deeply rooted cultural and spiritual values. Under the MIMC’s stewardship, the center will focus on delivering holistic care, encompassing physical health, emotional well-being, and spiritual enrichment.”
According to the organization, the residents would benefit from quality healthcare services, nutritious and balanced meals, and a supportive community environment.
“In addition, regular meditation sessions, counseling support, and opportunities for meaningful social interaction will form an integral part of daily life, reflecting MIMC’s philosophy of “Compassion in Action, Meditation in Action,” the MIMC added.
Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena affirmed the MIMC’s commitment to serving humanity, particularly the elderly, with dedication, humility, and compassion.
“This collaboration between the Union Territory Administration and MIMC stands as a powerful example of how governance and spiritual institutions can work together to build a more inclusive, caring, and humane society,” he said. “It also reflects Ladakh’s enduring tradition of reverence for elders, while setting a benchmark for integrated and dignified approaches to senior citizen welfare.”

In addition to integrating spiritual development and human and animal welfare, Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena and the MIMC are also closely involved in peace-building and interfaith dialogue, environmental conservation, and in promoting Buddhist and Himalayan cultural heritage through national and international festivals. Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena has traveled extensively to participate international conferences, seminars, and workshops to promote spiritual and cultural values, environmental awareness, non-violence and world peace, and elevating the status of women in society—especially those from underprivileged communities.
In 2021, Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena led a team from the MIMC on a humanitarian relief mission to the border regions of Ladakh, offering material COVID-19 relief as well as much-needed emotional and spiritual counseling for local residents who were living in fear during the dual crises of the pandemic and the military-led border standoff between Indian and Chinese troops. The same team also led a peace campaign in the conflict zone, appealing to the two nations not to resort to violence, but to resolve the standoff through peaceful means.*
