Online Dharma: FPMT Offers Introductory Online Course in Buddhist Mind Science

From fpmt.org

The Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), an international Buddhist community founded by the late revered Gelug masters Lama Thubten Yeshe and his heart disciple Lama Zopa Rinpoche, recently announced the launch of Buddhist Mind Science: Activating Your Potential, a self-paced online course of study aimed at modern students seeking contemporary pathway to access the Buddhist teachings.

Buddhist Mind Science: Activating Your Potential is an introductory FPMT course that blends Buddhist wisdom with modern science to uncover the roots of suffering and happiness, build a practical meditation toolkit, and activate your inner potential for warmheartedness and wisdom,” the FPMT said in an announcement shared with BDG.

The is comprised of seven self-paced modules that explore understanding happiness from a Buddhist perspective, the workings of the mind and emotions, and cultivating and  embodying compassion and wisdom in daily life. Each module includes lectures, assigned reading, meditations, and practical exercises.

“Buddhism is considered by some to be a “science of mind” because it presents a comprehensive map describing the mind and its various aspects and functions,” the FPMT observed. “The Buddha’s teachings also provide methods to observe the mind directly and to discover and activate our inner potential. And it does so with one intention: to overcome suffering and its causes, and to cultivate true, lasting happiness.” (FPMT)

Presenting both Buddhist and modern scientific perspectives, the FPMT’s course introduces students to Buddhist knowledge of the mind and explores:

• Practical techniques and insight on meditation
• Understanding the mechanisms of suffering and happiness
• Tools for finding purpose and mental balance in daily life
• Discovering and activating inner potential for warmheartedness and wisdom

“The course is intended to address the needs of modern students, with a fact-based approach to the study of the mind and meditation,” the FPMT remarked, noting that the course was previously only available in-person at FPMT centers. “It is ideally suited for those open to learning about Buddhism with an emphasis on the practical integration of its teachings in daily life; interested in the dialogue between the Buddhist and scientific perspectives when applied to the fields of study on meditation, the mind, compassion, or well-being; and keen on developing a repertoire of tools, including meditation and contemplation techniques, to contribute to living meaningful, beneficial, and happier lives.” (FPMT)
