The state government of Uttar Pradesh, India, will showcase its extensive Buddhist heritage at the upcoming Busan International Buddhism Expo 2025, to be held at BEXCO in Busan from 7–10 August. The event is one of the largest Buddhist gatherings in Asia and offers a platform for countries with strong Buddhist traditions to present their spiritual and cultural legacies.

The Uttar Pradesh pavilion will be formally inaugurated by senior officials from the Indian embassy in South Korea to underscore the diplomatic and cultural significance of India’s participation. Organizers aim to emphasize India’s historical and spiritual connections with Korea, including through shared Buddhist roots and the ancient story of Princess Suriratna of Ayodhya, who is believed to have married a Korean king in the first century CE.

Uttar Pradesh is home to several key sites from the Buddha’s life, including Sarnath, where he delivered his first sermon; Kushinagar, where he passed into Mahaparinirvana; and Shravasti, Sankisa, and Kaushambi, all of which played pivotal roles in the development of early Buddhism. These locations form the core of the Buddhist Circuit, a pilgrimage route that draws millions of domestic and international visitors annually.

According minister of tourism and culture for Uttar Pradesh, Jaiveer Singh: “Uttar Pradesh is not just the land of temples and traditions. It is the land where the Buddha gave the world his first sermon and where his journey of peace concluded. Through this global platform, we will invite the world to rediscover India through the path of Dhamma.” (Travel and Tour World)

The pavilion will feature a blend of traditional and high-tech storytelling tools, including virtual pilgrimages, 3D digital narratives, and curated cultural artifacts. These interactive exhibits are intended to engage a broad international audience, particularly those with an interest in spirituality, mindfulness, and cultural history.

India and South Korea share a long history of Buddhist exchange. In addition to the narrative of Princess Suriratna, Buddhist teachings from India spread to Korea via China in the early centuries of the Common Era, profoundly shaping Korean religious life. Today, Korean pilgrims frequently visit Buddhist sites in India, especially Sarnath and Bodh Gaya.

Principal secretary of Uttar Pradesh tourism, Mukesh Kumar Meshram, noted: “By showcasing our rich Buddhist legacy in an international and engaging format, we aim to strengthen India’s cultural diplomacy and make spiritual tourism more relevant to today’s generation. Our goal is for Korean visitors to see Uttar Pradesh not just as a destination but as a spiritual home.” (The Statesman)

The 2025 Expo’s theme, “Find Your Enlightenment (with the Eightfold Path),” is expected to resonate especially with young visitors, including a growing demographic in the West interested in mindfulness and spiritual wellness. Uttar Pradesh’s contribution to the event is positioned to attract this global audience while reinforcing India’s place at the heart of the Buddhist world.

South Korea has seen increased interest in spiritual and wellness tourism in recent years. The partnership between Indian and Korean tourism officials aims to build on this trend by promoting travel to India’s Buddhist heritage sites. The pavilion will also offer practical travel information for Korean and international tourists, including logistics for visiting pilgrimage sites, accommodation options, and insights into the lived spiritual culture of the region.

Uttar Pradesh’s participation is part of a broader national effort to modernize infrastructure across the Buddhist Circuit, integrate digital platforms for tourism promotion, and cultivate international partnerships in the cultural and spiritual domains. These initiatives are supported by the central government as part of India’s diplomatic and economic soft power strategy.

With hundreds of millions of Buddhists worldwide—particularly in East and Southeast Asia—India’s Buddhist heritage continues to serve as a vital link in transnational cultural diplomacy. By participating in the Busan Expo, Uttar Pradesh aims not only to invite tourism but also to foster greater global understanding through the teachings of the Buddha.
