Engaged Buddhism: Buddhist Non-profit FHSM Conducts Free Eye Clinics for Underprivileged Communities in India

The socially engaged Buddhist non-profit organization the Foundation of His Sacred Majesty (FHSM) has announced the completion of a new round of free eye clinics for underprivileged communities in India, with the two most recent free clinics held in the southern state of Telangana. The FHSM operates multiple programs aimed at assisting and empowering socially marginalized and economically challenged communities across India.

“FHSM has recently completed two eye clinic camps in Telangana under this noble initiative,” FHSM founder and president Gautama Prabhu told BDG. “We have held a total of 26 camps so far for the financial year 2025–26, reaching out to more than 3,000 marginalized people.”

Headquartered in Chennai, the capital of India’s southern-most state of Tamil Nadu, and active in nine Indian states, the FHSM is founded on and guided by the principles of socially engaged Buddhism, with a focus on helping deprived and marginalized communities. The foundation’s work is based on four broad propositions: social transformation through strengthening grassroots democracy and good governance; and sustainable livelihoods, education, and social empowerment; promoting alternative healthcare systems; and protecting and conserving ecosystems. The FHSM is affiliated with the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB).

FHSM most recently held two free eye clinics in Telangana, visiting Velpur, a village in Nizamabad District on 16 July, when 203 beneficiaries were screened and 100 people were provided with glasses to improve their vision. A second clinic was conducted on 25 July in the village of Kammarpally in which 35 people were screened, of whom 11 received vision correction.

“We thank our donors for having confidence in us in providing support while pursuing this noble endeavor,” Prabhu emphasized. “We extend our gratitude and loving-kindness to all the medical practitioners, volunteers, well-wishers, and our beloved staff team for being part of this wonderful initiative to improve people’s lives.”

FHSM’s free eye clinics are supported by the Mumbai-headquartered company All Cargo Logistics, with medical expertise provided in cooperation with medical organizations such as Agarwal Eye Hospital and the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad.

Named in commemoration of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka (r. c. 268–c. 232 BCE), a key figure in the propagation of Buddhism across Asia, the Foundation of His Sacred Majesty was established in 2007 with a mission to “preserve, promote, and disseminate the principles of liberty, equality, fraternity, and social justice through non-formal education, sustainable livelihood, and conservation of ecology, alternative/preventive medicines, social empowerment, social advocacy, and social development in order for the restoration of the human dignity of the poor and marginalized.” (Facebook)
